46. Betreyl It had been too quiet the whole time. Even now, as I crouched behind some bushes. Cetbal was before me, land around the town barren. I slid out my gun, cocking it. Looks like I would have to do this on my own.
47. Emily Finally, I felt the sole of my boot land against the packed dirt of a village that must’ve been nearby. I pushed through the last of the trees, finding myself standing on the unkempt, broken paths leading to one of the little towns. Though none of them had noticed me yet, or looked down the path, I could see them clearly. The ghouls seemed to have taken over this place long ago, and I could label the old civilians by their semi-modern, tattered clothing. I moved as silently as I could to the side, since I didn’t have as much ammo as I’d hoped and I really didn’t want to fight an entire village at the moment. I crept through a gap in the huge, broken fence, managing to slip past unseen.

48. Betreyl I crept forward just a little bit. There was no security... no one watching out. What was going on...?
49. Emily “Wait,” I said frantically, even though I knew they wouldn’t. The ghouls were coming at me faster and faster; who knew they could actually run? “Wait…waitwaitwaitwait!!” Deimos threw one of his knives at them, cutting through the top of the zombie’s head. “Where’s the closest place to hide?” “The tool shed from earlier.” Deimos responded. “Are these the only two following us still?” “Positive.” I sighed in relief. “If I had to pick between hiding with a corpse and fighting a town full of zombies…I’ll take the corpse.” “Agreed.” Deimos said robotically. I pushed through the last of the brush, the abandoned shed now in sight. But for some reason, something didn’t seem right about it.

50. Betreyl I stopped. That wasn't good. I turned back, something striking me. "Emily!" I dashed forward, gaining speed as I moved. The place I'd left her should've come up in front of me, but instead it was rubble. I slowed. "Emily?" I heard coughing, and saw the debris shift. I stepped over to it, "Emily?" Deimos lifted some wood away, letting Emily sit up. "I wasn't even gone for 30 minutes and you get attacked!" I sighed, crouching next to her, "But the question is, by what?" "A dog. A big dog," She shuddered, "How did you find us...?" "Vampire," I smirked. Low growling echoed. I stood, "It didn't leave either." A dark shape rushed at me. I barely saw its claws as they raked my side. I gasped, falling to my knees, hand on my side; but it was all ready gone. I sighed, "Are you all right, Emily...?"

51. Emily “That stupid thing almost bit my face off.” I replied casually, brushing flecks of dust from my shoulder. “Thank God I have Deimos here.” I swore I saw my Guardian smile. Trey, on the other hand, said in a very distracted tone, “Yes, Casper must be very helpful.” Before painfully standing, his back hunched as if it could help to ease the pain. I scowled in his direction, but he took no notice. He merely sifted through the remains of the tool shed, looking, I knew, for Fawn’s body. “Negative.” Deimos said softly. Trey and I both looked up. “The girl’s body is no longer in there.” “Then where did it go?” Trey demanded. For a moment, Deimos said nothing. “I do not…understand. It is not possible for the body to move of its own accord.”

52. Betreyl "No... She wasn't dead," I muttered, "She's a vampire. A wound like that couldn't take her out for long... But... Even with that shot, she should still be here," I shook my head, "It doesn't make sense." I clenched my jaw as another wave of pain shot through my side. This was getting ridiculous. Even my own blood was tempting. "There weren't any guards at Cetbal, but it was barren for at least ten miles around the city. We should rest." "You should sit," Emily said, pushing me back. I stumbled back, falling on the ground. That was unsuspecting. I propped myself up with my other elbow. "What was that for?" "You need to hold still. That needs to heal." She said matter-of-factly. Like she knew everything about me.

53. Emily “/Can/ you heal yourself?” I asked in a surprisingly strong voice. He scowled in my direction from where he lay. “That’s like asking if you know how to eat food.” He said in a disgusted tone. I glared at him, wondering why he’d even bothered to look for me again if he was going to treat me like this. “Fine. I’m just trying to get some info; you don’t have to snap at me.” I retorted. “What are we gonna do now?” Trey sat up, his hand hovering over the gash in his side, the skin slowly knitting back together. “Maybe you should’ve thought of that before you ran off like a moron and almost got crushed.” “It still doesn’t answer my question.” “Hmm…” he stood up, his side fully healed, but the side of his shirt was ripped. I pulled my own coat tighter around my body. And, of course, he seemed to notice, and I was expecting him to take this chance to humiliate me.

54.Betreyl "Like I said, we should rest for the time being. You should probably get a new shirt," I smirked, laughing, "If there is fighting that has to be done hand to hand, your going to have some problems." "You..!" She growled at me. "You can't kill me," I said with my arms wide, "I dare you to try." She glared at me a moment before sighing and looking away. "And what would Deimos's opinion be on this?" Emily nodded to him, "We should rest. We need time to practice. We won’t know what we're up against." "So it’s settled. Now we have to find somewhere else to stay."

55. Emily I hate you…I thought as I trudged next to him on the dirt road. “And where do you suppose we’ll find a place to stay? We’re in the middle of a dead forest next to a dead town.” “A few dead towns, actually.” Trey corrected. “Besides, there’s a village around here.” I tried not to stiffen. The only village was the one I had just run from; and nothing, no ghost town or ghoul village, had been more disturbing. “No,” I said softly. “Not that village.” Trey turned around, a wicked smile stretched across his face. “And why not?” he said, walking backwards and still managing to dodge the fallen trees and thorny bushes. “I can see you’ve been there before; what’s so frightening about it, Emily?” I ground my teeth together. “We are not going there.” I replied. Pieces of what I had seen flashed in front of me: a large well, filled with nothing but the decaying bodies of people who hadn’t survived the ghoul’s poisons, the large fire in the center of the little town that had people impaled over the flames…so many horrible things I didn’t even want to describe them. “It’s the only place with shelter,” Trey said, as if that was the only thing that mattered. “Sure, there are ghouls there. We could kill them all.” “Well, have a blast.” Seeming to sense what I was planning, he looped one long arm around my waist and even hauled me up from the ground so I dangled in the crook of his arm like a doll. “Don’t even think about leaving me again,” he said to me. “All that I can predict right now is that you’ll get yourself in some sort of trouble, being eaten and such.” “By zombies or you?!” I shrieked, my voice higher than I expected. “Put me down!” But Trey merely laughed.

56.Betreyl I smiled, "You keep forgetting I can overpower you. That’s not going to help you. Should I prove I could take you out at anytime?" "Just put me down!" She demanded, "I'm not helpless." "Compared to others, yes. Besides that, if I put you down, you'll take off running, and I'm sure you don't want me to chase you down." She glared at me, "/Asshole/." I smiled, "That I am." I let her drop to the ground. She looked at me curiously. "If you take off running, I /will/ bring you back," I threatened. I noticed that she shuddered as she weakly nodded.

57. Emily “I’m still not going with you.” I snapped, wheeling around and running down the opposite way, my legs moving faster than they ever had before. I heard him sigh; even when I was already much more then halfway down the road. I heard him take one step, just one almost-silent footfall against the dirt… …And then he was right beside me, peering at me over the rims of his glasses, and he merely reached out and grabbed me by the back of my collar. “Hey!” I choked out. He sighed through his clenched teeth. “Emily, Emily,” he said in a scolding voice as I clawed at his fingers. “Didn’t I tell you?” “You—” I was cut off as he lifted me from the ground, spinning me around to face him. And now that he was holding me up, I could stare extremely clearly into his eyes.

58.Betreyl I bared my teeth at her, snarling, '"I told you I could stop you. I could kill you if I really wished to. Now, are you going to come with me or not?" She simply stared at me, eyes wide. I blinked, letting her drop as I relaxed. She nodded dumbly. "Sorry," I muttered quietly, hair falling in my face, "Are you coming or not?" "Good. I don't to do that again anyway. I've started to slow down," I shook my head.

59. Emily I’d never had a person who confused me, scared me as much as he did. Not even the disgusting ghouls back at that village. Not even Deimos, when I’d seen him for the first time. “Slow down, huh?” I asked in an undertone. “I really don’t understand you.”

60.Betreyl "A human like you wouldn't understand a vampire like me," My tone was full of venom, for a reason I didn't understand. I sighed, "Let’s go. This is taking longer than it should." I turned on my heel, walking away. "Hurry up, Emily." I heard her stand slowly before walking after me. It wasn't long before she was struggling to keep up with me. "Emily... How did you get this way?" I asked curiously, referring to her life.

61. Emily I scowled in his direction. “What do you care?” I snapped. He waited patiently, yet his step quickened, showing his frustration. I sighed, forehead creasing. “My family died about a year ago. Murdered by a horde of ghouls who’d invaded our city.” My hands fisted, and I was glad they were hidden in my sleeves. “I had to watch them all die. I think I screamed, and I got hit in the head pretty hard. All I remember after that is just blackness. But when I woke up, I was covered in the demons’ blood.” I didn’t want to say any more. Then Deimos’s shoulder brushed mine, giving me some sort of comfort. “Ever since that day, I’ve had a second voice in my head. A voice that isn’t mine.” Deimos took my hand, strange for him, and when I looked up to see his face he looked completely stoic, as if he didn’t even know what he was doing. “And I don’t know who the real me is anymore.”

62.Betreyl "Its terrible, isn't it... Not knowing who you are. Almost like you're under control," I ground my teeth together, my fist clenching, "It... You lose yourself." She looked up at me curiously, but I glared at her, the subject dropping.
